Thieme reads Jandl

Friday, 23. May 2025 - 7pm

On August 1, 2025, the 100th birthday of Ernst Jandl will be commemorated. The Austrian writer left behind a distinctive body of work and wrote his way into the hearts of his readers with many poems. Jandl was also a brilliant performer who worked his magic at the intersection of literature, music, and visual art. The actor Thomas Thieme from Weimar, himself an avowed Jandl enthusiast, will present a selection of the most humorous texts.

This year’s Poetry Film Days festival will focus on the theme of “Humor.” The reading also serves as the festival’s opening event.

Thomas Thieme, born in 1948 in Weimar, has performed as a theater actor on numerous stages both in Germany and abroad, and is well known to wider audiences from many films and TV productions (including Downfall and The Lives of Others).

Our focus on humor this year is designed as a German-Austrian dialogue. To mark the 100th birthday of the great Viennese poet and performer Ernst Jandl, we will be showing films from Peter Böving’s Neudietendorf block cinema and confronting them with films by the duo Hubert Sielecki and Gerhard Rühm. Vienna greets Weimar, Weimar greets Vienna.
